Crooked Tree Breadworks ranked near the top in a tasting of mail-order breads conducted by Fortune Magazine (January 22, 2007)
In a selection of loaves from some of the best bakeries in the country, Crooked Tree’s Sourdough Boule took third place overall for its combination of taste, aroma, appearance and packaging, as judged by an 18-member panel.
"It is very gratifying to have been invited by a nationally-recognized magazine to compete against bakeries of this caliber," said Greg Carpenter, Head Baker and Proprietor. "These were some of the bakeries that inspired me to become a baker."
Other bakeries invited to participate included New York bakeries Bread Alone and Amy's Bread; Dayton, Ohio bakery Dorothy Lane Market; and fellow Michigan bakery Zingerman's of Ann Arbor.
"All of these bakeries are large establishments with well-deserved reputations for baking exceptional bread,” Carpenter said. “I'm thrilled that our little shop in Northern Michigan stacked up so well against them."
